  • 2019 Calendar Discussion

We started this conversation at the meeting last week. It was suggested that, instead of trying to pick random dates every month, we focus on a Club Ride Weekend, regularly scheduled, like we do with the meeting.

The second Saturday was thrown out as an example, but looking at a calendar, I think the first weekend might work better. It would mesh with the Super Sunday Run, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Harlan Fall Crawl, and the new/returned Tour dates the first of November. Plus, the Hangover Run and Memorial Day weekends will only be a week out of rotation, vs two.

Speaking of, it was also decided to make the three holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day) official Club Event Weekends. We want to draw as many Members as possible. We can't and won't dictate that anyone has to come, or can't go somewhere else. But we will ask that you do try to join us, and organize any alternate rides back-channel and off the Forum.

We'll look for as much input here as we can get, and then we're planning an Officers Meeting soon to pin down the final decision.

With that said, these are the days/dates/weekends I'm looking at:

Tuesday, January 1st - Hangover Run at Haspin

Sunday, February 3rd - Super Sunday FreezerBowl

Sat/Sun March 2/3 - Dirty Turtle Day Trip
    Sat/Sun March 16-17 - Trail Work at Rich's Farm

Fri-Sun, April 5-7 - Badlands Offroad, Attica IN

    Fri-Sun, May 3-5 - Rush Offroad

Fri-Mon, May 24-27 - Memorial Day Club Event at Black Mountain, Harlan KY

    Sat-Sun, June 1-2 - Club Cookout at Rich's Farm

Thur-Sun, July 4-7 - Fourth of July Club Event and Cookout at Rush Offroad

Fri-Sun, August 2-4 - Bear Wallow, Ethel WV

Fri-Mon, Aug 30 - Sept 2 - Labor Day Club Event At Rush

    Fri-Sun, October 4-6 - Fall Harlan

    Fri-Sun, November 1-3 - CORE Tour 19

Saturday, December 7 - CORE Christmas Party

So, those are the dates I was thinking of. Now, destinations.

I'd personally like to see Rush on there as much as possible.

I know the group likes to do a spring trip to Harlan too.

Golden Mountain and WindRock were popular this year.

A few guys went to Bear Wallow and really liked it.

There are a couple-few new parks opening down around Slade.

    Other suggestions and input?

The main complaint with Badlands was the limited riding hours vs distance to get there. But yeah, if there are guys that want to go, we can absolutely put it on the calendar.

I would say a trip here would need to be in the days when it gets dark early. It's also not much fun more than 2 days. Maybe head there on a Friday evening, get up and be ready to wheel when they open in the am. Do the same on Sunday for a few hours and head home.

I'd like to hit Bear Wallow this year, providing my rig is done.
If Golden Mountain is still open, I'd go providing my rig is done.
          Areas around Slade sound fun.

            I agree with ya!
            Would love to hit:
            Bear Wallow,
            Slade,
            Harlan (2 times)
            RUSH (4-5 times),
Adventure Off Road Park (Heard it's pretty good, but located in Ten...)

As stated in the first post, I highly agree with keeping the same dates for the monthly club runs. In this case you can use a combination of the 1st weekend of the month and then certain holidays and continue to use that format year after year. There can be some short term pain for people who have to schedule days off way in advance, but after you get through that it tends to make it easier as you can basically schedule days off and plan the calendar years in advance. Keep in mind you can never accommodate everybody's schedule 100% of the time and often when the schedule gets shuffled at the last minute to accommodate one person you then wind up losing 2-3 other people who now cannot make the new date.

I have been to Slade many times in the past, but not since any of the "official" parks have opened (these parks contain most of the big name obstacles we ran). When we ran the area there were always several miles of pavement between the parking lot/campground/motel and trail head and between different trails. I think part of that was being much quicker to jump on a road and buzz down to a new trail as compared to spending 3 times as long driving down a bumpy dirt road to get there, but again I don't know what it is like now with the different parks. There was a group from old club down there a couple of weeks ago that I will get a report from.

Has anyone heard of Pumpjack Off-Road Recreational Park? Looks like it's located in Columbia, Kentucky per their Facebook page.

At the November meeting we talked about trying to do it before the time change, so that getting off the trail by 5 would at least be dusk. But that's March 10th, so I don't know if we want to go that early in the year?

If we wait til after the end of April, their summer hours are til 7. There's nothing about that on their website, I just called to confirm.

3.5 hours drive, but over 1200 acres, so it might be worth checking out?
