axle swap i'm getting ready to start
i ordered parts from carwash to swap these in 3/4 ton d44 with 4.09 gears and welded already setup with high steer http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0009_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0014_large.jpg 14 bolt with 4.10 gears / open http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0008_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0012_large.jpg h1 rims /tires http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0016_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4015_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4016_large.jpg |
all of the work is done by me except the motor work. i'll pay for that to be done
as you can see i've done all of this inside a one car garage. yea its cramped |
Lookin good! What kind of motor work you talkin? This rig for muddin or crawlin?
|
i had the 360 rebuilt and i won't mess with internals of engines. to many tollerances and i don't have the right tools for it.
this is my second project vehicle and i learn as i go. i'm building this rig to be a dual purpose rig. drive where ever i go wheeling and do all local mud bogs and easy to mild rocks. i know, d44 front but i don't have the money to invest in d60 front. everything i've done is on a budget and i've been collecting parts for just over a year buying whatever good deals i've found. all the metal work i did, i only have about $100 in metal materials. i just keep checking local scrap yard as they sell metal pretty cheap. i'll be running soa with yj leafs. i know i'll need to purchase new tires but options are limited in 16.5 rims. i also want a radial tire. as it is now it runs down the interstate at 70 mph at 3k rpms and drives straight. i hope it'll do the same when the swap is done. not sure about heim joints on a daily driver though. |
Looks great. For anyone that has been around a while, this is Pats old Jeep. We had some good times in that Cj.
|
When I bought it all the body mounts were rusted out and the body had rust all over but in easy places to fix. Motor was blown and already bored 60 over so I had to find another block. He had cats as his mufflers with flex pipe as exhaust. The only thing good on it was the tranny and tcase.

Ah, memories...
|
thanks to carwash for the parts. the frame out riggers are nice. i had to modify 3 of the four and almost cried when i had to cut his nice welds. rear 14 bolt is bolted in and now working on the front.

looks like you've done more in one year than brad...a.k.a. kargomaster has done in say what, the last 5 years. :D
|
Appreciate that Boomie...
Is that the illusive texas-bolt-pattern 1980 IH D300???? That might be one of the most $$$$ parts on there... Nice looking jeep... You may find that the 36's and 14 bolt will drag a bit, but it's a 14 bolt, you could HANG the thing by the rear dif and it wouldn't care... Pat's ol' gal appreciates the love, I'm sure. |
i do plan on shaving that 14 bolt but i won't be doing that myself and its not in the budget anytime soon. oh and pats ol "gal" is going through some life changes and is becoming a "man" :)

finally rolled it out of the garage to measure for shocks
http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4034_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4035_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4032_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4037_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4038_large.jpg |
well i started installing a clocking ring on the tcase. i'm building my own crossmember/skid plate. got everything installed today and measured for front driveshaft.
http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...052_medium.jpg new crossmember uses stock bolts in frame and i put a couple bolts through the frame on each side. i welded coupler nuts so when i get some plate for skid plate i can unbolt it to access the tcase oil pan. http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4054_large.jpg |
